Neve 1073 preamp:
inputs 1,2
inputs 9,10
inputs 15,16
Pictured behind me is probably the most famous Neve console ever made. I have had the pleasure of being invited into Dave Grohl's Studio 606 for many recording projects to track and mix on the legendary Sound City Neve console. These experiences led me to invest heavily in my own Neve preamps, EQ's and compressors. What is so special about the vintage Neve design? Engineers love the Neve sound because it is thick, round, and musically colored. Equally important, the EQ section of both the 1073 and later the 1081 series are highly regarded amongst top engineers all over the world. Back to equipment page here.
Neve 1073 EQ:
inputs 1,2
inputs 9,10
I love the 1073 EQ on snare drums, vocals, bass and guitar. This EQ is a mid-band inductor-based EQ. The circuit was designed for musicality with gentle sound-shaping across low shelving, mid bell-curve, and high shelving bands. The inductor-based technology produces resistances at fixed frequency points across the spectrum that can be cut or boosted offering a classic ‘analogue hue’ when engaged.
Neve 1081 EQ:
inputs 15,16
The 1081 was first introduced in 1972 and for more than 50 years engineers have found that the 1081 is an indispensable tool for recording and mixing drums, bass and percussion with fine point precision. I find it is also incredible for guitar tone shaping and breathy vocals.
Neve 33609 compressor:
inputs 1,2
The Neve 33609 compressor brings a very transparent compression and as much attitude as you desire. I use it on drums (particularly on top snare and outside kick) as well as on bass and guitar when I want a THICK sound. The makeup-gain circuit is great for adding a little more grit and warmth to any source as well.
Neve 2254 compressor:
inputs 9,10
2254 compressors exploit the electrical properties of diodes in their control circuits to produce compression curves. The 2254 produces a wide range of compression types, ranging from subtle & smooth to aggressive & overdriven. I really like these compressors on toms, percussion and acoustic guitar.
Teletronix LA-2A Compressor:
inputs 15,16
A classic combination is to pair the Neve sound with an LA-2A compressor/limiter. The tube warmth present in the LA-2A adds fullness and depth to the sound. LA-2A compressors use a light emitting diode (optical compression) to adjust voltage creating it's hallmark smooth sound signature but you can also drive the input for saturation when desired. While some audio companies claim to offer the LA-2A signature magic - nothing comes close to the true 1968 vintage design like what we offer here at JTRS.
